Getting Started on a Sober Life

What is Heroin and How Does Someone Start Using It?

Sobriety is core to Banyan Treatment Center's philosophy on drug treatment. Along with sobriety, we help our clients to lead healthy, happy, and productive lifestyles.

There are a number of methods to choose from for working on achieving sobriety. The well-known Alcoholics Anonymous program describes itself as “an international fellowship of men and women who have had a drinking problem.” The AA and Narcotics Anonymous programs work with clients to teach them a new way of living. For many, the idea of living a sober lifestyle is something very foreign. Clients work with sponsors, attend meetings, share stories, and read from the “Living Clean: The Journey Continues” book to help support their new sober lifestyles.

“The Big Book” is known as the fundamental text for the program, and teaches readers about the Twelve Step program, which consists of a group of principles to practice as a way of life. It teaches the reader to find a way to turn their life into something happy and useful.

Because this book was written when the program first began, it's become a little out of touch with modern clients. This is why attending meetings is incredibly important for a client to maintain a sober lifestyle. Meetings help because each individual has unique stories, but everyone can relate to them. When people enter the program they may have left their life and friends behind in their unhealthy lifestyle. Bonding with others who are working on their own sober life is extremely helpful to encourage recovery. Many times, lifelong friendships are even formed from people meeting during AA or NA.

Ultimately, the program aims to help recovering addicts become the best person they can possibly be. Many will have to learn how to enjoy life being sober after spending the majority of their time under the influence in destructive times of life.

If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, don't hesitate to contact a healthcare professional to talk about your options.
