What Type of Treatment Will Work Best for You?

What Type of Treatment Will Work Best for You?

If you’ve made the life-changing decision to get help for drug or alcohol abuse, you should lift your head in pride.

It takes a lot of courage to come out of the shadows and admit that you need help to get your life back on track. So many people hide in their denial to avoid shame and guilt but choosing to come forward and seek recovery is the best thing you can do for your life. Once you decide to go for treatment, however, the options at your disposal can seem confusing and overwhelming.  You need to take stock of your needs to determine which programs will suit you best. Factors like what you’re addicted to, how long you’ve been addicted, your financial capabilities, and any other health concerns will all be factors in your decision. Addiction treatment breaks down into three main categories:

Inpatient

The commonly held concept of rehab is a full-treatment inpatient program in which you’ll spend 30 to 90 days in a medical treatment facility with full time medical care and a wide range of recovery services.  This always the most thorough approach and recommended if you have a serious addiction to opiates or narcotics. You’ll have 24/7 help with withdrawal symptoms and ongoing training for how to resist relapse after treatment is over. These programs are the best choice for long term success because of the valuable isolation you get from the outside world and all of its distractions and temptations.  Patients who come out of an inpatient rehab program often have a fresh perspective on their lives and a new direction for growth.

Outpatient

For those unable or unwilling to commit to an in-residence stay at a rehab facility, there are outpatient options that allow you to come in to the clinic for a few hours each day to receive treatment and counseling services. This is an ideal situation for someone with a manageable addiction and life obligations, however when you aren’t being supervised around the clock, doctors and counselors can’t guarantee your successful recovery. There’s too many variables about your life that are out of their control.

Counseling

Mild addictions that are not life-threatening can be beaten and managed with the right form of addiction counseling. Things like food addictions, marijuana habits, and functional alcoholism are often a matter of willpower, focus, and discipline rather than full medical situations. A professional addiction counselor can help you navigate your detox and withdrawal, as well as coach you on avoiding the triggers that make you want to abuse substances or overdo it with harmful behavior. A big part of addiction recovery is understanding how and why you got addicted in the first place and deconstructing those reasons in therapy. Regardless of the manner of recovery treatment you opt to go with, it’s important that you take action today to put a stop to the destructive cycle of addiction in your life.
